A Breathtaking Hiking Experience: Immersed in Cushetunk Mountain Nature Preserve’s Beauty

On a rainy Saturday, 24th June 2023, I embarked on a hiking adventure that would leave me in awe of nature’s wonders. Joining Vivek Jain and Desi Outdoors Doers, we set out to explore the captivating Cushetunk Mountain Nature Preserve in NJ. Despite the rain, our spirits remained high as we embraced the challenges and breathtaking sights that awaited us. This experience not only prepared us for future demanding hikes but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among the participants. This hiking experience further served as excellent preparation for upcoming challenging hikes like Machu Picchu and Kilimanjaro.

Come along as I recount the memorable moments and valuable lessons learned during this invigorating journey into the heart of nature.

The Rainy Start:

As we gathered at the trailhead, raindrops fell lightly upon us. Undeterred by the weather, we embarked on our hiking expedition. Before starting our ascent, I led the group through stretches to warm up our muscles and ensure everyone was physically prepared for the journey ahead.

Breathing Techniques and Hiking Tips:

Vivek Jain, our knowledgeable guide, emphasized the importance of proper breathing techniques for hiking. He taught us to adapt our breaths to different terrains, utilizing short breaths while ascending and longer breaths while descending. This conscious approach to breathing significantly improved our stamina and overall hiking experience.

As we began our hike, we encountered an interesting incident. While using hiking poles for the first time, I experienced a couple of unexpected falls. Luckily, fellow hikers Darshana and Mahaveer provided invaluable tips to ensure a safe descent. They recommended descending sideways to engage the IT band and placing the hiking pole in front for stability. These insights greatly enhanced my hiking technique and prevented further mishaps.

Exploring the Enchanting Lake:

Amidst our ascent and descent, we discovered a hidden gem — a picturesque lake nestled amidst the lush greenery. The lake’s tranquility drew us in, and we seized the opportunity to spend time in its embrace. It was the perfect setting to indulge in yoga, nourishing conversations, share food, and recharge our spirits.

Sharing Knowledge and Camaraderie:

While enjoying our well-deserved break by the lake, we collectively engaged in a fruitful knowledge exchange. I demonstrated various stretches targeting the quads, glutes, hamstrings, inner thighs, lower back, shoulders, triceps, and arms. Additionally, Vivek Jain led a tutorial on breathing patterns, introducing us to techniques such as Bhastrika breathing. We discovered a newfound appreciation for the power of breath control and its impact on our physical and mental well-being.

Throughout the hike, I had the pleasure of meeting remarkable individuals who shared a passion for the outdoors. Binita, who traveled all the way from Virginia, showcased her enthusiasm and completed the challenging loop twice. Darshana, who generously shared tips on descending safely, mentioned her preparations for a future grand canyon hike. Mahavir offered a friendly gesture by driving me to and from the hiking location, showcasing the camaraderie that developed within the group.
