As professionals, we all strive to become the best versions of ourselves in our careers and it’s essential to showcase our skills and expertise to advance in our careers. Many of us struggle with balancing the need to showcase our skills and expertise while also focusing on honing our technical abilities. Unfortunately, many of us fall into one of two categories:

  • Those who possess strong technical skills but lack the ability to effectively showcase them, and
  • Those who excel at showcasing but may not have the depth of technical knowledge to back it up.

The key is to find a balance between the two. It’s important to possess a strong foundation of technical skills in our respective fields. However, it’s equally important to have the ability to effectively communicate and showcase these skills to others. This is where the concept of “showcasing” comes into play.

Showcasing is the ability to effectively demonstrate your skills and expertise to others, whether it be through presentations, networking, or social media.

Remember that we all have unique strengths and weaknesses, and that the key to success is identifying where we fall on the spectrum of technical skills versus showcasing abilities, and then making a plan to improve in the areas where we may be lacking.

For example, if you possess strong technical skills but struggle with showcasing them, consider utilizing platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, GitHub etc. to share your knowledge and expertise. These platforms allow you to connect with a wider audience, and demonstrate your skills through writing articles, creating videos, or sharing relevant industry news and insights.

On the other hand, if you excel at showcasing but may lack technical depth, it’s essential to invest in your technical skills and knowledge. This can be achieved by taking relevant courses, attending industry events, or even shadowing more experienced colleagues.

It’s important to remember that showcasing without technical abilities will lead to mistrust and lack of credibility. On the other hand, possessing technical abilities but not showcasing them will limit your impact and potential for growth. So, strive for balance and become a well-rounded professional who excels in both technical and showcasing abilities.

Having a balance of both technical and showcasing skills will help you to earn the trust and respect of your customers, colleagues, and team members. Without showcasing skills, you will be overlooked, and your technical abilities will go unnoticed. And, if you lack technical skills, your showcasing efforts will be in vain, people won’t trust you, and you won’t be able to make a big impact.

However, it’s important to remember that this process is not easy and it’s not going to happen overnight. Remember, greatness is not achieved overnight, it takes hard work, dedication, and a willingness to constantly learn and grow. But the rewards are worth it, by becoming a well-rounded professional, you’ll be respected and trusted in your field, and you’ll open yourself up to new opportunities and advancement.

As a mentor, I have found that working with individuals who possess strong technical skills but lack the ability to effectively showcase them, is a more manageable task. While it may be more challenging to develop technical skills in those who excel in showcasing but may lack the depth of technical knowledge, it is still possible to achieve a well-rounded skillset for both.

In conclusion, it’s crucial to strive for balance, by honing both technical and showcasing skills, you’ll be able to make a bigger impact and truly stand out in your field. So, start working on your skillset today and become a valuable asset to your team and organization.
